Guilty Pleasures

I've never pretended to be one of those hip indie dads who reject anything smacking of commercialism as not worth even a listen. I simply like the music that I like, and my kids are the same way. They don't care what label the singer is signed to, or how many t-shirts they sell, or even if "some producer with computers fixes all the *!$%#* tracks."

So when my kids tell me they like a certain song or singer, I don't argue with them about it. Even when I think it might be something I would personally dislike.

Lately my daughter has taken a liking to.... Barbie music.

Yes, songs from those surprisingly well-done animated movies, like Fairytopia, 12 Dancing Princesses, and The Magic of Pegasus. She LOVES those movies, and she asked if I could find the music from them.

And to be completely honest, I find myself enjoying this music almost as much as she does. It is what it is... Pretty melodies, simple upbeat lyrics, soaring voices...

This is what she wants to hear. And I'm as surprised as anyone that I kinda sorta like to hear it too. Definitely shaping up to be one of my guilty pleasures.

Music from the Barbie Movies:

"Theme from The 12 Dancing Princesses"
"Written In Your Heart"
"Shine"
"Wings"

Going where eclectic music has not dare to go.
I like it.
(in a hideous sort of way).
Cheers from Switzerland.

Been reading and enjoying your blog for some time.
Just dropping a line to see if you've heard the newest Spongebob album, which sort of sound like a great lost Beach Boys album with cartoons singing. Maniac producer Andy Paley and Spongebob himself Tom Kenny put the thing together. It's surprisingly awesome.
And I don't even work for the record company!
I'd be curious to know how your kids respond, though.
Thanks for the great blog.

Fairytopia is big among my daughter's first grade classmates too. We have the books and the DVD -- thanks for the heads up on the CD!

My guilty pleasure in kids' music lately has been Sweet Honey in the Rock since one of their old children's albums was recently rereleased to the iTunes Music Store.

hi, unable to download the song "Shine"
would you be kind enough to upload it once again?
i have been looking for that song for months for my daughter.

thks!

Hey I will admit I love the Barbie music too. Even though I'm 18 I still listen to it all the time. The MP3 downloads didn't come up for me. Is there any other way I can get them?

An important note

I have posted MP3s for sampling purposes. Many are old school and not available on CD. But some aren't. Some are current. Support the bands you like by buying their CDs, seeing them live, wearing their tees. I'm gonna leave songs up for about a week or so. Then, poof. If you own the song and object to it's placement here, by all means, let me know. I'm happy to remove.
